Get Your Home Ready for Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, here are a few tips to make sure your home is ready for all the festivities!

Shine Your Silver

Make sure your best silver is extra-shiny for the Thanksgiving meal.  Skip the harsh chemicals and clean the all-natural way – place your silverware in an aluminum or enamel pot and boil with water, salt, and baking soda. After three minutes, remove the pieces, place in warm, soapy water and scrub with a soft cloth.

Call the Plumber

The day after Thanksgiving is among the busiest for plumbers, particularly for sink drains and garbage disposals clogged with animal fat and grease, and starchy foods that expand in the pipes. If your drains are already running slow, schedule a plumber to unclog them before Thanksgiving Day.

Fireproof Your Home

Between the cooking, baking, and scented candles, there are too many chances to create accidental fires around the holidays. Make sure there are smoke alarms around the kitchen and living areas, as well bedrooms on all levels of your home.  Keep fire extinguishers within easy access, especially in the kitchen and near fireplaces and exposed flames.

Balance Your Heating and Air System

To save energy and make sure your guests remain comfortable, balance your heating and air conditioning system.  Check where airflow may be too light or too intense and adjust the vents as needed.  Close the vents in rooms that won’t be occupied, and make sure vents in the living, dining, and sleeping areas are open.
