Prepping Your Home for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Here are some simple ways to prep in advance so you can enjoy the day with family and friends!

Choose your menu. For main dishes, like turkey and ham or other meats, stick with a tried and true family recipe, or look online for recipes such as this one from Food Network. You can also order the main dish from a local restaurant or grocery store, and focus on delicious sides and desserts. Choose traditional dishes like mashed potatoes and green bean casserole, and mix it up with one or two new items to complement the meal!

Set the table. Whether you are planning to use your finest china, everyday dishes, or paper/plastic for a more relaxed meal, go ahead and arrange the dishes, cutlery, and drinkware in your eating area. Adorn your table with simple and elegant decor such as these showcased on Good Housekeeping.

Tidy up the house. Have the whole family pitch in to vacuum, dust, decluttery, and sanitize a few days in advance. Alternately, consider hiring a cleaning service to come for a few hours – the cost may be well worth the time saved!

Prepare for overnight guests. If friends or family are staying overnight, freshen the guest quarters and lay out clean towels, soap, and toiletries. Note any special needs your guests may have, such as a portable crib for little ones or handicap-accessible spaces for older relatives.

Plan the entertainment. Entertaining ideas don’t have to be costly or complicated. Think of fun activities to involve the whole family, such as charades, karaoke, or your favorite board game. Gatherings with extended families are the perfect opportunity to reminisce on sweet memories and recount funny stories. And of course, there’s always the Thanksgiving day football games!

Relax and enjoy. About an hour before your guests arrive, take some time to freshen up and enjoy a glass of wine or cup of tea to relax. Prepping in advance should allow you to enjoy the full day with your family and friends!
