If you’d like to take a quick getaway for the upcoming long weekend, there are several fantastic destinations within a few hours of Atlanta. Consider taking a roadtrip to one of these fun, family-friendly cities close to home!
Chattanooga is under two hours from Atlanta and has tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy. The Tennessee Aquarium, nestled in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, features a variety of marine life in 400,000 gallons of fresh and salt water. Don’t miss the unique exhibits, including the alligator bayou and lemur forest. If you have young kids, check out the Creative Discovery Museum, just a few blocks away from the aquarium. The museum includes a science theater, play gym for toddlers, and tons of interactive exhibits to explore! This weekend will be the debut of Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit. Civil War buffs in the family will love the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Learn about the 1863 Campaign for Chattanooga and take a ranger-guided tour of the battlefield grounds.
Greenville, South Carolina
Downtown Greenville has emerged as premier destination for affordable, family-friendly fun in the Southeast. The crown gem of Greenville is Falls Park on the Reedy, a 32-acre linear park in the heart of the city. The park includes beautiful landscaping and walking paths that link visitors to quaint shops and fantastic restaurants. As you stroll through downtown, see if you can find nine whimsical bronze mice statues tucked amongst the streets! Downtown Greenville also has a variety of free and low-cost museums, including the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, Greenville Museum of Art, and Upcountry History Museum. The whole family will love the Greenville Zoo, just a few minutes from the downtown area. Don’t miss the two ocelot kittens and baby siamang that just recently joined the zoo’s family!
Also known as Rocket City, Huntsville is home to the US Space and Rocket Center, the largest space museum in the world! Learn about the incredible space race and the United States’ quest to explore the stars. Exhibits include the original capsule trainers for the Gemini and Mercury programs, design modules for the International Space Station, and Explorer I, the first American satellite. The museum also includes a SpaceDome IMAX screen, realistic simulators, and next-gen space vehicles. Don’t miss the Marshall Space Flight Center Tour, which will give you a firsthand look at the astronaut command center and highlight the different types of research conducted at the International Space Station! Huntsville offers a variety of other exciting attractions including Lowe Mills, the largest privately owned art exhibit space in the US; the Huntsville Orchestra; and Bridge Street Town Centre, which features a movie theater and over 70 shops and restaurants.
