Labor Day Fun in North Georgia

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the long Labor Day weekend! Check out these ideas for fun, family-friendly excursions and activities close to home.

Jefferson
Jefferson is set among the rolling, pictureqsue foothills of North Georgia. Start your day at Hurricane Shoals Park; swim and wade in the shoals, and explore the covered bridge and historic gristmill.  Next, visit the Crawford W. Long Museum, which exhibits the life and career of the pioneer of surgical anesthesia.  The Pendergrass General Store on site is a reminder of life in rural Georgia in the mid 1800s.  Finish the afternoon with a trip to Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm, an outdoor agricultural museum that has been in active operation since 1799.  Explore the sprawling farm complex, which includes an 1860s-era farmhouse and two-room school house dating to 1909.

Dahlonega
This quaint town was built around a major gold rush that began in the 1820s. Reminders of this booming period still exist today in Dahlonega. The Consolidated Gold Mine offers gold and gem panning, and an underground cave tour where you can explore the some of the area’s original gold mines. Follow this fun excursion with a true Southern meal at the Smith House, which offers all-you-can-eat, family-style dining with all your favorite dishes. The Smith House features its own gold mine shaft dating to the 1800s, which was only discovered in 2006! After lunch, take a relaxing float down the Chestatee River on tubes, kayaks, or canoes. Appalachian Outfitters hosts trips for all ages and skill levels.

Helen
This Bavarian-themed town is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and outdoor entertainment. Check out The Christmas Shoppe, which sells unique ornaments and Christmas décor year-round. For an authentic Bavarian meal, grab a bite to eat at one of several German restaurants in town, such as Bodensee Restaurant, followed by a sweet treat at Hofer’s of Helen, a bakery and cafe. Kids will love the horse-drawn carriage rides, putt-putt golf, and tubing on the Chattahoochee River. When you’re ready to explore beyond the small town, visit the beautiful Anna Ruby Falls and Unicoi State Park, just a few minutes’ drive away. You’ll enjoy breathtaking vistas and have the opportunity to hike, boat, and even camp!
