New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

800px-New-Year_Resolutions_listThe New Year is the perfect time to make a fresh start in the care and maintenance of your home. Here are some great New Year’s resolutions for your and your family to strive for this year.

Get rid of the excess.  No doubt, your drawers and cabinets are full of items you don’t need anymore.  Go through your kitchen and utility closets and purge any items you haven’t used in the past six months.  Set them aside for donation, or trash them if they are no longer in good condition.

Streamline the clutter.  This is a great time to make space for all the little things that clutter your tabletops, countertops, and other surfaces.  Purchase simple woven baskets to store remotes, DVDs, school supplies, and other items you would like out of sight.  In their place, set a fresh bouquet of flowers or a small figurine to bring energy and beauty to your home.

Safety first.  Ensure that there are working smoke detectors on each level of your home (particularly near the kitchen and bedrooms), and that they each have fresh batteries.  Install a carbon monoxide monitor on each level as well.  Hire a professional to clean the ducts and vents behind your dryer – lint is highly combustible and contributes to more than 15,000 fires per year.

Set up a cleaning routine.  At the end of each day, make sure dishes are either washed or placed in the dishwasher, and wipe all surfaces.  Throw dirty clothes in hampers and hang your clean ones.  Most importantly, resolve to make each family member pitch in.  Each week, older kids can vacuum, do laundry, and mop, and the little ones can make beds, clean up their toys, and wipe tabletops.

Beautify your space.  Make your home a warm and inviting space for your family and friends.  Keep fresh flowers throughout your home, or purchase artificial foliage to brighten the rooms.  Add some colorful new throw pillows to update your living area.  Consider re-arranging your furniture so it’s oriented in conversation groups, rather than towards the television.
