It’s almost time to send the kids back to school! Here are some great tips to make sure your home is ready for the new school year.
Clean out closets and drawers. If your kids have outgrown clothes, set those aside for donation, and toss any items that are worn or damaged. Consider purchasing a hanging clothes organizer with compartments for each child, which can hold clothes for each weekday – this will keep you from scrambling to find clothes each morning!
Whether your kids will be studying in their rooms or at the kitchen table, make sure there are plenty of school supplies nearby. Purchase an organizer for their desk to hold pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, tape, and anything else they will need to complete homework. If they will be studying in a common area, set aside a drawer or cubby to hold school supplies, or purchase a caddy that can be moved from room to room as needed.
Create a central spot in the kitchen to keep track of school papers and important dates. While the kids are eating their afternoon snack or during dinner prep, they can unpack their backpacks and place important announcements or papers that need to be signed in a designated “inbox.” Hang a calendar and use a different-colored marker for each child to mark upcoming band rehearsals, sports practices, parent meetings, etc.
Make mornings easy by prepping lunch the evening or weekend before. Better yet, have the kids help! Place sandwich materials like deli meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomato in labeled compartments for easy access. Buy pre-packaged snacks like chips or pretzels in bulk, or put individual servings of snacks into small plastic baggies. Items like string cheese and yogurt tubes are easy to grab for little hands.
Organize the items in your entryway. Hanging utility hooks adhere easily to the wall and are perfect for storing backpacks, jackets, and small umbrellas. Purchase a low-slung shelf to organize everyone’s shoes. Making a designated space for these items will clear the clutter and help mornings to run much more smoothly!
