Christmas is right around the corner! Here are some tips to prepare your home and make it a welcoming place for family and friends.
Clear the clutter from your entryway, and create spaces for people to place their shoes, coats, and other outdoor wear. Consider installing a row of coat hooks or purchase a coat rack to keep track of outerwear. Purchase a couple of inexpensive shoe racks with enough room to accommodate tall winter boots.
Create an inviting space for your guests. People often use guest rooms as secondary storage areas – clear out the clutter and make sure there are no personal items laying around. Don’t forget to provide a set of towels, extra warm blankets, and other items that your guests may need. Stock your guest bathroom with basic toiletries and extra toilet paper, and include festive touches like a pine-scented candle or soap.
Prep your eating areas. If you are planning to host a formal meal, your tablecloths and cloth napkins are likely wrinkled after a year folded in storage. Iron your linens lightly, or use wrinkle release spray. If you are bringing out the fine china, make sure your dishes are wiped down and silverware is polished. Or, stock up on high-quality disposable dinnerware to keep cleaning easy. Create space for food prep and serving by clearing your counters of clutter and extra appliances.
Deck your home with holiday cheer. Your Christmas tree is surely up, but there are other festive touches you can easily add to your home. Use plug-in scents or warm holiday-scented essential oils as a safe alternative to burning candles. Spray pine scent on your tree and garland. Keep your favorite holiday tunes playing throughout the day, or stream a holiday-themed online radio station.
Don’t forget the little ones! Keep puzzles, crayons, drawing pads, and other activities within easy reach to entertain your youngest guests. Arrange for the kids to create easy holiday crafts, such as paper snowflakes or candy cane reindeers. Plan on streaming some family-friendly holiday movies that everyone can enjoy together.
