According to the US Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for 56 percent of energy use in the average American home! Here are some tips to ensure that your heating bills don’t rise as fast as temperatures are dropping this winter.
Turn on your ceiling fans. It might seem counterintuitive, but ceiling fans can help regulate the temperature in your home. Set the fan to a low speed and let it spin clockwise – the warm air close to the ceiling will mix with cooler air and heat the whole room.
Keep your drapes open during the day and closed at night. The afternoon sunlight will help warm your home. On frigid nights, your drapes or blinds will keep all that good heat from escaping.
Get a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. Maintain a low temperature when you’re not at home to keep from unnecessarily running your furnace or heat pump.
Maintain your heating system. Make sure your system is inspected and maintained on a regular basis, and replace your filter every 4 to 6 weeks. This will keep everything running efficiently, and potentially save huge repair costs down the line!
