As Thanksgiving draws near, here are some tips to make sure your home is ready for all the festivities!
Check Your Smoke Alarms
If you didn’t check your smoke alarm batteries when daylight savings time began, you’ll definitely want to do so before you prepare the big Thanksgiving meal. Check the batteries in each of your smoke detectors to be sure they alert you to potential fires from unattended candles, ovens left on, and other holiday hazards.
Safety-Proof Your Home
Eliminate any potential hazards for your littlest guests. Get down on your hands and knees to get a “kid’s eye” view of anything that could cause harm, including exposed outlets, pet food bowls, access to stairs, and breakable items within their reach. If you have older guests, remove tripping hazards such as cords and rugs, and ensure there is sufficient walking space in hallways and between furniture.
Call the Plumber
The day after Thanksgiving is the one of a plumber’s busiest days, thanks to sinks and garbage disposals that get clogged with grease and starchy food. Call the plumber to snake a line down your sink a few days before to remove any clogs that might be there. After the Thanksgiving meal, dispose of leftovers in the trash instead of the sink.
Let the Kids Pitch In
Kids can help with simple tasks like dusting, making beds, and wiping down countertops. You can also have them create place settings, centerpieces, and other table decor. Check out Pinterest for some great ideas for easy Thanksgiving crafts!
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help!
There’s no shame in hiring help to clean your home, spruce up your yard, decorate the interior, or even babysit the kids while you prepare for Thanksgiving! Hire a professional or consider paying teenagers or older kids in the neighborhood to help out.
Breathe
At the end of the day, the warmth and joy of the holiday will make the greatest memories. No one can achieve a spotless house or the perfect meal. Instead of stressing out over the details, take time to relax and savor the holiday with your loved ones.
