As the summer draws to a close, here are some tips to ensure that the whole family has a great start to the new school year!
Ease kids (and yourself) into the school year schedule. Lazy summer days are great, but now is the time to get your wake your kids earlier and enforce earlier bedtimes.
Create a central spot for all paperwork from school and extracurricular activities. Place a dry erase calendar on the wall and fill in important dates and appointments. Use a bulletin board to hang important papers, and use wicker or wire baskets for a simple filing system.
Shop early for school supplies and clothes. Before you purchase your children brand-new wardrobes, sort through their clothes – donate items that are too small, and toss items that are worn or damaged. School supplies are already on sale at big box stores, grocery stores, and office supply stores, so you should be able to get everything you need in one place.
Check their records. If your child is starting a new school, make sure you have their immunization records ready to submit. For older kids, confirm that they have had all physicals and medical exams, and set aside those records for the first day of school.
Prep the night before! The best way to ensure a smooth start to the school day is prepping as much as you can the evening before. Kids can help pack their backpacks, make lunches, and set clothes aside for the next day. Keep breakfast items within easy reach for quick morning meals. Consider planning dinner for the week – make casseroles, stews, or other bulk meals on Sunday that can be easily reheated on busy weeknights. Or try your hand at freezer cooking!
